The United States Practical Shooting Association is the controlling body for the American region of the International Practical Shooting Confederation (see below). Known as USPSA the American region is the largest individual region with a membership of 15,000 with affiliated clubs across the nation.

The SCSA has clubs across the country that hold matches at the local and regional levels throughout the year culminating in the annual World Speed Shooting Steel Challenge Championship match.

International Practical Shooting Confederation better known as IPSC, (pronounced ip-sick), is credited with organizing a governing structure around an informal style of competition emerging primarily from a group of shooters in Southern California beginning in the late 1950’s.

International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) was formed as a competition to simulate self-defense scenarios that might occur in real life. As IPSC and USPSA moved more to the sport or gaming side of competition the founders found a segment of the shooting sports that were looking for a home closer to the martial-artist side of handgun competition.
