Western 3 Gun sets itself apart from SASS competition by allowing “shooting on the move“. Similar to IPSC style competition with 19th Century Guns and SASS costuming. Maybe the best of all worlds? SASS as an organization shoots multiple guns however any change in position is made after the current gun is made safe. Then the competitor moves to the next position and the next firearm is retrieved from a staged position.

Western 3 Gun allows the competitor to engage targets as they move through the course of fire, similar to USPSA Multi Gun competition. This makes for high-speed shooting on-the-move excitement.

Firearms are restricted to Single Action revolvers, period Lever Action or “Lightning” rifles and Single or Double Barrel and Pump Action Shotguns of the era. The minimum caliber for pistols and rifles is .32 and shotguns 20 gauge or larger. Cap and Ball revolvers must be a minimum of .36 caliber.

The holsters and ammo belts must be period style made of leather or canvas and worn in traditional style. Although period clothing is encouraged it is not as strict as SASS but there are some minimum clothing restrictions such as jeans, a Western style shirt and hat. No sneakers or baseball caps.

W3G makes use props and obstacles that the shooter must negotiate to complete the course-of-fire. Often the props are made to look like Western buildings and towns. Pushing through swinging Saloon doors to gain access to an array of targets is not unusual.

Several Classes are available based on either equipment or shooting style. Gunfighter requires that the shooter alternate shots from a pair of revolvers held in each hand while Duelist shoots a single gun one-handed unsupported. Black Powder cartridge and Cap and Ball spew fire and smoke making them very popular classes to shoot the early guns.
