SASS – Single Action Shooting Society

Own the complete collection of John Wayne Western movies? Grew up with Hopalong Cassidy? Went to bed wearing your Lone Ranger Double Six Gun Actoy Cap Guns? Did your mom ever say “You’ll put your eye out kid?“. Always felt you were born in the wrong Century? The Single Action Shooting Society has a home for you.
Cowboy Action Shooting was started by Harper Creigh in 1981, then an IPSC competitor, who dared a couple of shooting buddies to shoot the next IPSC match using their Single Action Cowboy guns. In 1987 they formalized the sport by forming The Single Action Shooting Society known as SASS.
SASS boasts a membership of 75,000 worldwide, with over 500 clubs in 18 countries. The History of the Old West isn’t celebrated only in the United States, interest in a worldwide phenomenon as evidenced by the many Italian “Spaghetti Westerns“.
One of the largest manufacturers of Western Guns today is Italian gun maker Uberti who makes an extensive line of replica Single Action Army, Navy Conversion, and Buntline smokeless powder guns as well as Blackpowder Walkers and Dragoons, and Henry, Yellowboy and Sharps rifles.
SASS events are shot with a combination of Six Gun, Rifle and Shotgun. The Competitor has several categories, divisions, and classifications to choose from. Smokeless to Blackpowder, Duelist, to Gunfighter.
SASS is not only about the guns of the Old West, it’s also about the era. Each member picks an “Alias” a SASS name or character and wears period clothing to embody that character. The costuming and Western Town settings are as important a part of SASS events as the shooting.
The biggest events held by SASS are the annual “End of Trail” and “Winter Range“. End of Trail is held at the SASS owned “Founders Ranch” a 480 acre facility located in New Mexico, complete with a Western Town. Winter Range is held at the Ben Avery shooting facility in Phoenix Arizona.
Plain old Cowboy Action competition not enough for you? Own a horse? Always wanted an excuse to own a horse? Cowboy Mounted shooting is just the ticket. Shooting your Six Guns while riding a galloping horse around a course of fire. Competitors shoot at balloons mounted on posts using blank cartridges. You not only have to feed your Six Gun, you’ve got to feed your horse as well.
Cowboy Action Shooting is the most fun you can have wearing your Cowboy duds and shooting your Six Guns. Learn more about SASS and Cowboy Action Shooting.
